At the top of each column there is a bigger area called “Latest Status” this is the same as the newest status item in the corresponding column, with extra focus on time instead of date and ease of accessibility.

Pressing the checked button here will cause the corresponding item to be marked as “read” and it will then also show this symbol on itself among all the others.
